A Message from the President: Aloha!

February 22, 2022

A warm hello to you on this new year of the Water Tiger.  Kung Hee Fat Choy!

HEA’s year has been one of celebrating its 100th birthday and doing the best possible during this pandemic environment. We could not be happier with your commitment to our mission of Celebrating a Century of Educators Shaping Hawaii’s Future Today!

A great big Thank You for your gifts and notes of congratulations! Members of the Board of Directors and I truly appreciate your support!

We have two more great Centennial Events planned!

On February 7th (Oahu) and 11th (Neighbor Islands) HEA is pleased to support the virtual HSTA Institute Days with a presentation by Fred Lane, author, attorney, educational consultant and lecturer on Cybertraps for Educators. He is the co-founder of The Center for Cyberethics and is a nationally recognized expert in areas of cybersafety, digital misconduct, personal privacy and other topics at the intersection of law, technology and society. He also co-hosts “The Cybertraps Podcast” with Jethro Jones (The Transformative Principal).

On January 3rd Dr. Lynn Hammonds, HEA’s Program Manager, and I announced on HNN (Hawaii News Now) KGMB television station with host Rachel Pacarro the upcoming April Centennial event titled, “HEA Connecting to the Future: Navigating the Second 100 years!” This event will be held on April 30, 2022 at the Bishop Museum from 9:30 am- 1:30 pm. See details on page 3.

We’re so very pleased that Dr. Glenn Medeiros will MC our program…. Remember his internationally number one hit song, “Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love for You” as a young teenager?

During lunch we will present HEA’s Centennial awards:

  • Three awards of $5,000 each to a P-12 in-service educators, P-12 in-service administrator and higher education faculty member.
  • One award of $5,000 to a high school TAAC club/Education Pathway teacher.
  • One award of $10,000 to a school team.
  • One award of $10,000 to a Hawaii educator preparation program.

The deadline for applying is February 25, 2022. Details are on our website: hawaiieducationassociation.org

I look forward to connecting with you in the coming months. Be safe, take good care, and be well!

With warm regards,
June Motokawa

A Message from Our President

Itʻs a real honor to be serving as president of the HEA board. I’m well acquainted with the work of HEA through Joan Kamila Lewis, my wife, who served as HEA’s president for a number of years.
