A Message from the President: Greetings from the School Zone!

August 15, 2022

I am your 2022-2023 Hawai’i Education Association (HEA) President, Joan Lewis, and I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support in keeping HEA an active partner in Hawai’i’s educational endeavors.

I also wanted to send out a special thank you to Past President, June Motokawa, and her Executive Committee for stewarding HEA and making sure that we are prepared for what is to come. The care, commitment and focus to keep HEA a vital and relevant part of the education community are appreciated more than words can say. I promise to do no less.

As I start my 34th year as a public school teacher, currently at Kapolei High School, I can bear witness to the sweeping changes that have taken place in the education profession and within our educational institutions. While there have been times that we have been brought to our knees with the weight of our work, our schools continue to be staffed with some of the most hopeful and helpful individuals anywhere to be found.

It is in that hope that our work in HEA must continue. The challenges to both the teaching profession and the education community at large are great. However, with the programs we provide, the support we offer, and the core belief that education continues to be Hawai’i’s best means for success and sustainability, I know that we will continue to be of profound service.

Please know that your ongoing support is valued. If you are so inclined, please join us in spreading the good word of the Hawai’i Education Association.

With much aloha,

Joan Kamila Lewis
Board President
