HEA 2023 Leadership Summit and Educator Workshop Draws Educators From Across the State to Hear Nationally Recognized Speakers on Artificial Intelligence
HEA President Joan Lewis welcomed leaders in P-12 and higher education from across the state at the Leadership Summit on December 8, 2023, and school site administrators and teachers on December 9, at the Blaisdell Center Pikake Room in Honolulu. President Lewis stressed that HEA is on the forefront of professional learning in the new and ever-changing field of Artificial Intelligence as she introduced two nationally known speakers, Fred Lane and Dr. Troy Hutchings.
Fred Lane is a nationally recognized expert on privacy and the impact of emerging technologies on society. He is an author, attorney, educational consultant, expert witness, and lecturer who has spoken to colleges, universities, and school districts around the country on a variety of issues, including student safety, electronic misbehavior, and digital privacy. Lane has written ten books, including “Cybertraps for Educators” and “Cybertraps for the Young.”
Mr. Lane’s presentation began with a history of Generative Technology, what most of us have been referring to as “Artificial Intelligence,” and brought the group up to the present use in banking, medicine, and the workforce. Mr. Lane recognized that there are positive aspects, including efficiency, automation, and personalization, there are many negatives, including loss of jobs, inaccuracy, loss of privacy, and criminal activity. For educators in particular, Lane cited potential competition among colleagues, over-reliance on AI in preparing and presenting lessons, and inadvertent violation of district or local law and policies as obstacles for the teaching force. In Mr. Lane’s words, “Fasten your seat belt, it’s going to be a bumpy night.”
Dr. Troy Hutchings, nationally recognized subject matter expert in educator ethics, also provides expert witness testimony in judicial hearings and has been the subject matter expert on a variety of national projects dealing with educator ethics including the Model Code of Ethics for Educators and the National Council for the Advancement of Educator Ethics. Dr. Hutchings is the Senior Policy Advisor for the National Association for the State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC).
Dr. Hutchings focused his talks on Artificial Intelligence and the Ethics of Professional Judgement. Dr. Hutchings led both groups through exercises focusing on projected societal risks, and the educator’s responsibility to society to support the greater good. His question to the group was, “What level of risk are we willing to accept?” Dr. Hutchings scenarios focused on some commonly recognized risks associated with AI, including plagiarism, cheating, privacy and data security issues, unequal access, and overreliance on AI which could cause students to rely on it instead of thinking for themselves. His recommendations to attendees were to have meaningful conversations on AI and align policies and procedures to their existing district policies, relevant federal regulations, and codes of conduct and ethics.
In addition to the speakers, a stellar panel from Pearl City High School Teaching as a Career Club (TAAC) and an Educator Preparation Program (EPP) faculty and teacher candidate from Chaminade University of Honolulu (CUH) shared their insights into the use of AI in the field.
