HEA Richard Keakahiwa/Wilhelmina Luna Scholarship

Scholarship Requirements and Procedures

The HEA Richard Keakahiwa/Wilhelmina Luna Scholarship has been established for an education major, intending to teach in a Hawaii public school, elementary or secondary level. One $2,000 scholarship is being offered to full-time undergraduate students currently attending an accredited institution of higher learning. Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.2 or better. A payment of $1,000 will be sent each semester to the credit of the recipient at the institution enrolled.

Richard Keakahiwa was a 6th grade teacher at Fern School in Honolulu!  He was an innovative teacher, with more than 20 years of teaching service!  He inspired his students to further their education & to give back to their community! He taught innovatively in music, art, penmanship, horticulture, English, math, agriculture, Hawaiian culture & language! 

Wilhelmina Luna was the mother of one of Mr. Keakahiwa’s students! She worked with him to ensure her son, Wilbur Luna, would work to become a public school teacher who would help students to complete & further their education as Mr. Keakahiwa had done!”

Wilhelmina Torres Luna completed 9 years of education in Pāpaloa, Hawai’i! She was a self-educated woman, a mother, seamstress, welder at Pearl Harbor during World War II, & custodian at Moanalua (One Room) School &  Kawananakoa Intermediate School!”
