HEA Carol H. Yoneshige Scholarship in memory of Faith C. Ai
Scholarship Requirements and Procedures
The HEA Carol H. Yoneshige Scholarship in memory of Faith C. Ai has been established for an education major in their 2nd or 3rd year, intending to teach in a Hawaii public school, elementary or secondary level. One $3,000 scholarship is awarded to a full-time undergraduate student currently attending an accredited institution of higher learning. Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.5 or better.
Carol Yoneshige, who was a proud graduate of McKinley High School and Kapiolani Community College, dedicated 18 years of her career to the Hawaii Education Association (HEA). Her journey with HEA began in 1968 as an office clerk, a position she held until 1973. After working at a prominent marketing research firm, Carol returned to HEA in 1989 as its office Manager, and worked closely with Executive Director, Dr. Daniel Tuttle. When Dr. Tuttle retired in 2001, Carol was appointed as the new Executive Director of HEA, a position she embraced with passion and commitment until her retirement in 2011.
During her tenure at HEA, one of Carol’s most notable contributions was the success of the Write-On HEA! Creative Writing Festival. For 21 years, this annual event celebrated and honored young writers from across the State and provided a platform for their creative expression. Winning entries were published, and students were recognized at a special Reading Reception Celebration, where they had the opportunity to share their remarkable work. Carol’s thoughtful personal touch was extended to the event attendees, who fondly remember her delicious homemade lup cheong gau gee and hot crab dip, which always provided a special touch of warmth and hospitality to the occasion.
In keeping with HEA’s mission to support the growth of future educators and educational initiatives for its members and their families, Carol played a pivotal role in managing HEA’s ongoing scholarships for high school students, continuing college students, student teachers, and in-service public school educators. In addition, Carol was instrumental in establishing three endowed scholarships to further support the educational aspirations of deserving future educators. These include the Faith C. Ai Lai Scholarship, the May & Hubert Everly Scholarship, and the Hiroshi & Barbara Kim Yamashita Scholarship. From 1997-2011 alone, she enabled the Faith C. Ai Lai Scholarship to award scholarships to future educators. These, and many other accomplishments, are a testament to Carol’s leadership at the HEA and her enduring commitment to advancing education and empowering aspiring educators within the community.
