HEA/HSTA-Retired Special Education Micro Grant Available

May 12, 2026

HEA encourages special education educators to apply for an HEA/HSTA-Retired Special Education Micro Grant, established in honor of Susan Hagiwara, a passionate special education educator who made a positive difference in the lives of children with special needs for many decades. Grantees will help carry on her legacy of helping children with disabilities and supporting educators in special education.

The grant is specifically for special education teachers, librarians, counselors—anyone who works with special education students and would like to work on a project with special education students. In the past, HEA has awarded grants of up to  $500 per project per person. Recipients are eligible for this grant until they reach a total of $5,000 in grants. Visit the HEA  website for details on how to apply.

HEA wants to showcase testimonials about amazing teachers to highlight the importance of our local educators. These stories will be featured throughout our website, newsletter and social media in 2021 as part of HEA’s 100th anniversary celebration.
