A Message from the President: Greetings from the School Zone!

August 7, 2025

Aloha!

As this new school year approaches, I find that my rest infused enthusiasm has been overshadowed by news headlines that include “…gutting of the  Federal Department of Education”, “…state DOE loss of $33 million in Federal Funding”, “…devastating cuts to Medicaid & SNAP benefits” and the list goes on. Between the loss of support for our most vulnerable populations, and the increase in obstacles for both those in our  profession and those who would aspire to join our profession, the implications are paralyzing.

An Inspiring Summer Summit
And yet, as part of my summer, I had the opportunity to participate in the Hawai’i Teachers’ Standards Board inaugural summit where so many entities and  agencies that support education in Hawai’i gathered. In that meeting, and in subsequent meet-ups that have occurred, I have found a path to revival…each of us and all of us collectively. In our discussions, we determined that there may need to be new paths forward, but forward we will go.

Committed to Finding a Way Forward
As HEA continues our work in support of educators, the education community and quality  education for all, our mission has never been clearer, nor our commitment more solid. From our  students to our aspiring educators, and to our new educators to our veteran and lifetime educators, we will find a way to be the helpers in the neighborhood that Mr. Rogers always talked about in his work.

Partnering with HSTA Retirees to Support Special Education
Our work in this upcoming school year includes an addition to our scholarships, symposiums  and summits. We are excited to be partnering with the Hawaii State Teachers’ Association  Retiree Organization (HSTA-Retired) in offering the first round of mini-grants supporting students with special needs as part of our Susan Hagiwara Special Education Teacher Micro Grant  Program. This program honors long-time Special Education Teacher, Susan Hagiwara; the personification of a leader that always finds a way to move forward through tough work with joy and hope.

Mahalo for Your Support
There was one headline that may not have gathered a great deal of press…support for foundations and non-profits is growing tremendously. For this, I am most heartened and grateful to you. We appreciate both your generosity and your ongoing commitment to our work. Together, we will continue to make a difference…no matter what.

Enjoy the last rays of summer sunshine with all the exuberance possible.

By the time you read this message, I will no longer be the president of the Hawaii Education Association as I will be stepping  into a position with another Hawaii educational stakeholder group. However, I am excited to continue to be a supportive lifetime HEA member.
