Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a top-of-mind topic for all leaders. Some have embraced AI as a valuable tool; while others have eschewed AI altogether.
In the field of education, AI can be a positive tool to close the digital divide and increase access to quality education for students across the socioeconomic spectrum.
Generative technology can also make education more interactive, personalized, and engaging. However, as with any tool, AI can be misused and have serious ethical and safety implications.
Policymakers and leaders from every industry sector are grappling with how to reconcile these views of artificial intelligence and generative technology. Leaders from all of Hawaii’s education sectors will come together for an exploration on the intersection of AI and ethics at the HEA Leadership Summit.
“Today’s students live and work in a world increasingly shaped by artificial and generative technologies,” said Frederick Lane, one of the Leadership Summit’s keynote speakers. “It’s the responsibility of schools to prepare them not just to use, but to understand, critique, and shape our technology-driven future.”
Lane is an author, attorney, educational consultant, lecturer, co-founder of The Center for Cyberethics and a nationally-recognized expert in cybersafety, digital misconduct, personal privacy, and topics that intersect with law, technology, and society. He will be joined by Troy Hutchings, PhD, Senior Policy Advisor for the National Association for the State and Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC), and subject matter expert for the Model Code of Ethics for Educators.
“The recent pandemic underscored the expanding role of technology in education. The pace of tech innovation is accelerating, and it is imperative for educators to stay at forefront of this change to avoid falling behind,” Lane added.
